Abstract

The study aimed to assess the impact of internet addiction on sleep quality among school children aged 6-12 years. It was an observational, descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted on 160 children who attended Al-Zahraa University Hospital and children of healthcare providers at the hospital between August 2021 and January 2022. The findings showed a statistically significant association between Internet Addiction Test (IAT) scores, sleep disturbances, and quality of life. The mean IAT score was 68.53±24.08, with 10.6% of children scoring normal, 5.6% mild, 45.6% moderate, and 38.1% severe internet addiction. Sleep disturbances were prevalent, with 90.0% of children experiencing nighttime resistance, 30.0% suffering from sleep delay, 49.4% from disturbed sleep timing, 60.6% from sleep anxiety, 84.4% from evening awakenings and disorders, 90.0% from sleep disease, 86.2% from sleep apnea, and 88.1% experiencing daytime sleepiness. The study concluded that excessive internet use was strongly associated with significant sleep disturbances in the studied children.
