Presentation Title:

Venous thromboembolism as a first sign of cancer - Trousseau syndrome

Abstract

The authors provide a schematic presentation of the problem of symptomatic idiopathic lower limb thrombosis proceeding the symptoms of cancer and literature review. The first scientist who described CAT as a first sign of the pancreas cancer was Armand Trousseau (1801 – 1867 Cliniqe medicale de I’Hotel – Dieu de Paris). CAT - including thromboembolism - VTE and arterial events is highly consequential for patients with cancer and associated with worsened survival. Cancer –associated thrombosis (CAT) is an impact cause of morbidity for patients with malignancy and varies primary cancer type, stage, and therapy. We aimed to characterize the incidence, risk factor, temporal trends, and the effect on mortality of CAT. Mahajn A. described about cumulative incidence of CAT between 6 to 12 months. Cox in patients with pancreatic, brain, ovarian lung and prostate cancer observed cumulative incidence of CAT lowest than 12- month. Zaaona MIA -maintained that thromboembolic disease can be the first manifestation of occult malignancy more commonly occur within six months of a cancer diagnosis. Prandoni maintained that 8 - 12% of thrombophlebitis migrans of the lower legs are the first sign of cancer. Pathogenesis of thus disease stems from the hypercoagulable state related of the increasing production of substance-like tissue factor that has high procoagulant activity. The authors hope that this paper will sensitive primary care physicians and professional doctors – angiologist, vascular surgeons of idiopathic thrombophlebitis migrans and the possibility that symptoms of malignant disease may occur in future, thus drawing their attention to need for further diagnosis workup to diagnose or exclude malignant disease.
