Prevalence and epidemiological profile of pulmonary tuberculosis among elderly population residing in old age homes in Salem district, Tamil Nadu
Abstract
Introduction: Globally tuberculosis being a curable and preventable disease, nearly 10 million was affected by tuberculosis and 1.5 million die every year. Mortality data also signifies that elderly persons are 6 times more prone for death due to tuberculosis and around 30% is the mortality in age group above 70 years.
Objectives
1. To estimate the prevalence of pulmonary tuberculosis among old age home inmates
2. To assess the epidemiological profile of inmates of old age home
Materials and Methods: This is an cross sectional analytical study, conducted among 300 elderly population residing in the 10 selected old age homes using simple random sampling method. Data was collected using a pre tested semi-structured questionnaire The study was carried out for a period of 12 months from January 1st 2023 - December 30th 2023. Categorical variables were described using frequency and percentage and Continuous variables were described using mean and standard deviation.
Results: Among 300 participants, about 50.7% were between 61-70 Years and 60.7% were females. Nearly 4.3% were current smokers, 28.7% were hypertensive and 20.6% were diabetic. About 15.6% had cough, 11.2% had fever and 4.8% had hemoptysis. About 62.3% of the inmates in the old age home were staying in dormitory type of room and only 28% were staying in a room with adequate ventilation Prevalence of tuberculosis was 2.6% (260 per 10,000 popultion) in this study. Tuberculosis was reported more in Females, those with presumptive symptoms, underweight individuals, those living in dormitory and those with comorbidity.
Conclusion: The results indicate that the key population should be concentrated for routine screening for tuberculosis. Pro-active interventions to seek and diagnose TB disease among older adults are more effective than traditional passive case-finding as we march towards elimination of tuberculosis in India.
