Title: Making Mental Health Accessible through Community-based Programs

Abstract

Mental health issues have risen globally. Depression is one of the leading causes of disability and suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among the youth. Unfortunately, the majority of those who need care do not have access to high-quality mental health services.  Given this, there is a need to ensure access to quality and affordable care for mental health conditions. Using the Medical Research Council framework for developing and evaluating complex interventions, this presentation describes the experience of the USAID Renewhealth project in developing and implementing public health and community-based interventions for the prevention and treatment mental health and substance use in the Philippines.  It describes the social, political, and cultural contexts that influenced the design of interventions. The evidence on the outcomes and implications for implementation will also be presented.
