Presentation Title:

Malwa region of Punjab suffers from selenium deficiency thyroid instead of Iodine deficiency hypothyroidism: A case study of Sri Muktsar Sahib district of Punjab

Abstract

Thyroid gland is one of the most important glands for metabolism and selenoenzymes helps in conversion of T4 to T3 hormone. 25 types of selenoenzymes help in uric acid formation, normal reproduction and cancer prevention. Selenium is the main element of family of monodeiodinase enzymes, also known as selenoenzymes (Gouriprasanna Roy et al (2005) Selenium-containing enzymes in mammals: Chemical perspectives. India J. Chem. Sci.117 (4). 287–303.) But Intake of high nitrogenous food products increases consumption of selenoenzymes for making more uric acid compromising thyroid and other body functions like reproduction and cancer prevention. To achieve the objectives of the study, primary data was collected from 140 patients selected from Sri Muktsar Sahib District of Punjab. SPSS, version 16 was used for Chi square test, Mean value and Standard Deviation for data of TSH, T3 and T4 hormones and uric acid. The study revealed that on giving organic selenium with eltroxin improvement was nearly 2.6 times more than eltroxin alone .The secondary hypothyroidism reported in non–experimental group (only eltroxin) was 4.6 times more than experimental group The percentage of normal TSH value increased upto 67.14 percent after giving eltroxin along with organic selenium. In non-experimental group, It increased to 25.71 percent after giving eltroxin only. Interestingly, on comparison of both groups, the percentage of patients with normal TSH was 41.43 percent more than the non-experimental group. Earlier hypothyroidism was related to iodine deficiency. Hypothyroidism problems in Malwa, Punjab where the iodine conc. is 16 ppm ( 15 to 40 ppm) are due to selenium deficiency. Here, hypothyroidism cannot be prevented by adding iodine to salt but can be corrected by reducing high nitrogenous intake or by increasing natural selenium in diet.
