Track: Maternal Health in Primary Care

PRIMARY CARE 2026
Maternal health is a cornerstone of public health and an essential focus within primary care systems. This session, “Maternal Health in Primary Care,” will explore the critical role that frontline healthcare providers play in promoting the health and well-being of women during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. With global efforts focused on reducing maternal mortality and improving health equity, this session aims to shed light on how integrated, accessible, and community-based approaches can effectively address maternal health challenges.

Primary care settings are often the first point of contact for pregnant women, especially in underserved and rural communities. This session will highlight how early and continuous engagement through primary care contributes to better outcomes for mothers and newborns. It will address not only clinical aspects of maternal health but also the social determinants that impact a woman’s pregnancy journey, including education, nutrition, mental health, and access to services.

Healthcare professionals will have the opportunity to discuss evidence-based practices and innovative models of care that strengthen maternal services in primary care environments. The session will also explore how digital health, telemedicine, and mobile interventions are transforming maternal care delivery, especially in remote regions.

Key Topics:

Antenatal and Postnatal Care in Primary Settings: Comprehensive care throughout pregnancy and after childbirth, including routine screenings, preventive measures, health counseling, and immunizations.

Maternal Mental Health and Emotional Well-being: Addressing the importance of mental health support for mothers experiencing prenatal and postnatal depression, anxiety, or stress. Emphasis will be placed on screening, counseling, and community-based interventions.

Nutrition and Lifestyle Counseling During Pregnancy: The role of diet, exercise, and behavioral health in supporting a healthy pregnancy. This track will explore the impact of nutritional deficiencies and ways to educate and support pregnant women.

Reducing Maternal Mortality Through Community-Based Primary Care: Strategies to identify and manage high-risk pregnancies early through outreach, screening programs, and timely referrals to secondary or tertiary care.

Health Education, Family Planning, and Reproductive Autonomy: Discussing the role of primary care in empowering women through informed choices about contraception, birth spacing, and reproductive rights.

Culturally Sensitive and Equitable Maternal Care: Ensuring that maternal health services respect cultural values and address disparities experienced by minority and marginalized populations.

Primary Care in High-Risk Pregnancy Management: How primary care practitioners can manage conditions such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and anemia through early detection and coordinated care pathways.

Technology and Telehealth in Maternal Services: Integration of digital tools to support maternal care, particularly in remote or underserved regions. Topics will include virtual prenatal check-ups, mobile health (mHealth) applications, and digital education platforms.

This session invites clinicians, midwives, nurses, researchers, policymakers, and public health professionals to engage in meaningful dialogue and knowledge exchange. Together, we aim to strengthen maternal health systems, promote safer pregnancies, and ensure that every mother receives the care and dignity she deserves no matter where she lives.

Join us in exploring the future of maternal health through the lens of primary care.
